Personal Summary

Dr. Hannah McAleese is a Postdoctoral Researcher at MTU studying quantum cryptographic protocols for use in industry.

From 2022-25, she was a Research Fellow in Quantum Physics at Queen’s University Belfast. She has published 9 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and 1 conference paper. She has presented her research at 15 conferences and workshops and delivered 5 invited talks for the University of Nottingham, University of Insubria, University of Palermo and the British Optomechanical Research Network. Along with her research, she has taught Mathematical Methods for Quantum Information Programming to undergraduate students from 2023-25 and co-supervised two PhD students.

She obtained her PhD in Quantum Physics in 2022 and MSci in Mathematics in 2017 from Queen’s University Belfast and is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Aside from quantum cryptography, her research interests include quantum communication, quantum networking and open quantum systems. In particular, she has completed several projects on entanglement distribution, analysing methods which use “weaker” quantum correlations like quantum discord. In a recent collaboration with engineers in the CONNECT Centre and Trinity College Dublin, she compared various entanglement distribution strategies in the setting of optical fibre networks.
